Couple therapy

Couple therapy is sought for a variety of relationship problems. Reasons include crises of various kinds, communication problems, infidelity, issues related to separation and divorce, alcohol etc. The common factor is dysfunction in one or more areas of the relationship between two individuals.

Couples usually come to couple therapy together. Sometimes couple therapy can also take place through one partner. This gives the partner seeking change an opportunity to study his/her own behaviour and role in the relationship.

A goal of couple therapy is to help both partners to gain insight into their own way of being in relationship. By studying the past the partners seek to identify the shadows which darken the relationship in the present and to make more room for more positive elements in the future of the relationship. Couple therapy aims to give partners the skills needed for understanding and respecting each other more fully.

Couple therapy usually begins with an evaluation of the present life situation. After this, decisions are made about how to proceed and where the relationship aims to go. Sessions usually take place at intervals of 2 – 4 weeks.
